The front door is propped open while the server cleans the floor around the bar, and it's cold in here. It is still bright outside, but the lights have been switched on in the back area where I'm sitting. Around the window to my right, strands of multicolored Christmas lights flash, slowly at first, then faster, faster, and then the cycle repeats. In the middle of the window is a large sticker depicting snow falling on a riverside village at night. A snowman stands on the wrong side of the river, with no apparent bridge to the other side, but he seems cheery enough nonetheless.
I'm on a couch along the back wall at a table for four. Farther down the same couch a couple sits at their own table for four. It's not that big a place, but there is plenty of available seating.
It's very quiet here. Outside is an enclosed area that might have tables in warmer weather, but at the moment it's completely empty. Three green plants of various sizes sit on the window sill, and two sugar cubes of identical size were given to me for my coffee. A kangaroo crossing sign adorns the Winston look-alike brand ashtray. The people having conversations seem very aware of how quiet it is in here, and they are whispering appropriately.
