Le Va et Vient du Nord

March 14, 2002

On the outside of the window next to me is written "Aujourd'hui / Couscous / Voir carte", but with the rain earlier the white of the letters has leaked a bit, running down the window like tears. I get my sugar in a tube, unfortunately. The glass ashtray on my square, swirling-brown-design table has a "Ricard" sticker on each of the four sides. A slight chill creeps in through the crack between the windows, offsetting the fact that there is a tall warm radiator on the column to my right. The chairs are metal, with tan seat and back cushions. There are separate drinking and dining areas. The lights hanging from the ceiling are upside-down pyramids, each side displaying an artistically rendered letter "N". I am cold enough that I have put on my coat, though I will be here another two hours.

I am in a little alcove, surrounded on three sides by windows. Outside is a relatively small intersection, but even so there are steady streams of people and cars in every direction. This café is on one corner, the other three corners of the intersection hold a pharmacy, grocery store, and rental agency respectively, going clockwise. The sky is grey, dismal. A man with a pony tail walks by outside eating something in his right hand and carrying a can of Orangina soda in his left. Three pigeons show up, strutting around the street corner like they own it, at least until someone walks or drives too close to them and then they flutter away to someplace out of view.
