Le Cadix

August 9, 2002 - 4:30 p.m.

I tried to order a banana split, but they informed me that they are closing for vacation tonight, and there are no desserts except for maybe chocolate mousse. So I just got a strawberry cocktail which the server was nice enough to open and pour for me. After a rainy morning it had turned into a very nice day, and I needed a little refreshment.

I also got an espresso, which came with a tube of powdered sugar. My table is square, fake wood; the ashtray is Heineken. The seventies-style chairs are minimalist with olive brown back and seat cushions held together by little bent metal rods, the four metal legs apparently descending from the seat cushion itself. The locals are living it up at the bar, making the most of the last day this café will be open for the next three or four weeks. What a country!
