Bar du Metro

May 3, 2002

When I sat down in this little bar at a nice window seat, a few trees within sight and a sunny blue sky, little did I know that someone would be using a jackhammer next door for extended periods of time. Too late to change cafés, I've already settled in and ordered my espresso. The only thing left to do is wait for the noise to stop, like that guy that keeps coming over from the bar counter to look out the window as if that might help somehow. At this moment, after two stretches of nearly unbearable hammering (I'm exaggerating, but it was deathly annoying, as is using the word "deathly"), there is thankfully some peace and quiet aside from some murmuring at the bar and surprisingly unobnoxious street sounds, considering that one of the front doors is propped open. A row of parked trucks and vans just outside threaten my view, but I'm supposed to be writing anyway (right?) and not looking out the window the whole time.

As for the fundamentals, the table is round, small, marble topped with a golden ring encircling the edge. The coffee cup and saucer are plain white; the sugar cubes came in a white wrapper with blue letters, and I was given an extra packet of sugar cubes for good measure (though I would be worried about anyone who put four sugar cubes into the same espresso). The ashtray is marvelously unique -- a plastic green Heineken one-of-a-kind item. Inside the ashtray is a bonus find: two crumpled sugar cube wrappers coincidentally also white with blue lettering. The cane wicker chairs in the front of the café are dark brown wood tied together with milk chocolate-colored strips and have white woven backs and seats.

There is a sign that I don't understand on top of the Lipton Ice Tea ad stuck to the vertical stripes of the radiator: 'Les consommations sont renouvlable toute les 1/2 heures. (Merci)." The "merci" is underlined twice, which makes me feel like I should be doing whatever it is the sign is asking me to because it would make the owner very happy. Oh well.
