Italian Style Café

September 6, 2002 - 6:30 p.m.

I'm not sure what makes it Italian-style, unless most cafés in Paris are Italian-style. I'm sitting at a small, round-style table with a Marlboro-style black glass ashtray. The espresso cup and sugar cube packet have an Italian-style name on them, Segafredo, maybe that's all it takes.

The place is small, eight tables inside and about the same number around the outside. Inside, the chairs are black metal with black vinyl seat and back cushions. There's a looped tape of dance music playing -- the catchy Superman Lovers' hit "Starlight" has played twice since I've been here, with no complaints from me. The rest of the music is rather repetitive but not too obnoxious. Maybe Italian-style means nicely-lit; the brasserie across the street doesn't seem nearly as pleasant with its cheap fluorescent lighting. Here there are tiny bulbs above the bar, and a couple of miniature Siamese twin-style lamps are affixed to the walls, complete with miniature lampshades. The walls and ceiling are a pleasant peach color. Not a bad place to relax for a while. Except that now there are hammering and drilling noises coming from a nearby construction site. Shouldn't these guys be off work by now? Oh well.
