Boy George is singing Karma Chameleon on the radio, and the tall bespectacled Asian waiter behind the counter lets out a yawn. A man in front of the bar throws his losing Rapido ticket onto the floor, says goodbye, and leaves.
My left hand drifts over to the radiator next to me to make sure there is still heat coming from it -- there is, but not quite enough. I'm sitting at a brown burn-patterned tabletop, square with rounded wooden corners. From left to right in front of me are a twisted and torn receipt, an espresso cup, saucer, spoon and empty sugar cube packet, and a Heineken ashtray.
The windows and walls are adorned with various lottery game advertisements -- across from me is a poster for James Bond scratch-off tickets (collect all ten!) with the pitch "License to win, up to 17,007 Euros."
I am atypically sitting with my back to the window in an effort to sit as close to the heater as possible. The windows around me are having trouble protecting me from the bitter cold outside, though, and I'm beginning to think there is probably a warmer place I could have sat. Winter has definitely come to Paris.
