Bird's Coffee / Les Oiseaux

March 13, 2002

Above the bar is a curved row of light globes interspersed with highly colorful bird figurines. Oldies, in french and english, are playing on the radio. A woman has made a half-hearted effort to set some of the tables for lunch. Only two places have been set so far with a lavender, textured paper mat, a white napkin and one glass turned upside-down. My table has a blue frosted glass ashtray. The table tops all have a brownish orange design on top that could be clouds or smokey explosions on a battlefield. Someone is singing about the Twist in french, so it sounds like "luh tweest". The chairs have metal frames and red seat cushions. The coffee came with two packets of sugar cubes. When bringing my espresso over after a slight delay the woman apologized for forgetting me. She has fluffy Princess Diana hair and a blue sweater; she is chewing gum. The room is large, two stories, and an upstairs dining area is visible to my far right, above a refrigerated dessert cabinet that also showcases the brands of beer that are available.

There is a woman that keeps walking by outside every few minutes(three times so far) -- she is dressed all in red with a red beret and a japanese design on the back of her red jacket, her tight red pants showcasing a complete lack of hips...she has all the voluptuousness of a tuning fork. The Fifth Dimension version of "The Age Of Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In" is playing now on the radio. An older man leans on the bar, his purple beret dipped provocatively towards his right eye, his left hand holding a cane. Now he has released his grip on the counter and is waddling out the door and down the street like one of those wind-up animals that can only move in very short, jerky steps. Now the french version of "Always Something There To Remind Me" is playing; it has a much more lighthearted feel than the Naked Eyes version, kind of a copa cabana-type of atmosphere.

Something smells good.
